I found a terrific set of photos of the Tour de France on Flickr. Click on the image.
Jens Voigt (CSC) won his second Deutschland Tour in a row today. Levi Leipheimer (Discovery) came in second and David Lopez Garcia (GCE) came in third. Gerard Ciolek (T-Mobile) won the last stage, a time trial, ahead of Erik Zabel, who nevertheless was the best sprinter overall.
Businessweek has posted a long article on how technology has changed the way people work on a daily basis, how goods are produced and services delivered. Laptops, the Blackberry, the iPhone, Skype, instant messaging, cheap data storage, broadband and video conferencing have allowed people to work remotely. The article fails to note, however, how large numbers of people have managed to never work for a boss again — entrepreneurs who start their own businesses precisely because the cost of setting up a business is much lower and they can now serve clients around the world.
If I were to write a piece on this new way of working, I would call it “The End of Office Politics” and talk about the freedom that people have working for themselves.
Ajax loses to Slavia Prague (1-0) in Champions League qualifications
Posted: 16 August 2007 in Sports
Ajax may have made lots of money from transfers of several key players (Wesley Sneijder for 27M EUR, Ryan Babel for 17M EUR and Kenneth Perez for 1.7M EUR) but its newly found wealth did nothing to save it from yesterday’s disaster at the Arena in Amsterdam where Ajax lost to Slavia Prague (1-0). The next match against Slavia is in Prague on 29 August. It does not look good for Ajax.
Skype has been down for 24 hours. There is an alternative to Skype. It’s called Gizmo Project. It allows the same free calls to other users of Gizmo (and other VOIP networks and devices that use SIP). You can also make very inexpensive calls to landline and mobile phones, and get a phone number in certain countries.
If you call often from a computer to a landline or mobile phone, the quality fo the call is much better than on Skype (at least for a Mac user). So I use Skype for calls to my other Skype contacts, but Gizmo for calls to regular phones.
The quality of calls between Gizmo users isn’t always good.
