Carlos Sastre (CSC) won the Tour de France 2008 beating out Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto), who everyone expected to win this year’s Tour. Cadel came in second after disappointing performances in the Alpe d’Huez stage and in the time trial yesterday. Bernhard Evans (Gerolsteiner) came in third.

But the other big news is Wim Vansevenant’s last place finish in this year’s Tour. He is the only man in history to finish last in three consecutive Tours. Three times the Lanterne Rouge is a record.

Wim Vansevenant finished second to last today in the time trial. Vansevenant is safely in last place – the Lanterne Rouge – after today’s stage and will ride into Paris tomorrow to be the only man in history to win the Lanterne Rouge three times in a row. Gefeliciteerd Wim!

Vansevenant keeps Lanterne Rouge position going into the Alps

Wim Vansevenant is still the Lanterne Rouge going into the Alps. He is a comfortable six minutes behind the second to the last in the general classement.

After today’s stage (number 16 from Cuneo to Jausiers), Frank Schleck is now wearing the yellow jersey but he is only 7 seconds ahead of Bernard Kohl and 8 seconds ahead of Cadel Evans, former holder of the yellow jersey. The race continues to be a tight one. Tomorrow’s dreaded Embrun to Alpe d’Huez stage (see official Tour de France video below) will probably determine who will win the Tour. Stay tuned!

Tour de France: Will Wim Vansevenant win a record 3x Lanterne Rouge?

Wim Vansevenant has been the Lanterne Rouge for two consecutive Tours (2006 and 2007) andÂ now is gunning for this third in a row. If he ends up last in this year’s Tour de France, he will be the first man in history to end up Lanterne Rouge three times in a row, a remarkable achievement given how difficult it is to end up last in the Tour de France three consecutive times.

Today, in the first stage of the Tour, he ended up fourth to last, which is very comforting. He needs to pace himself, make sure he does not end up in the voiture balai (the broom wagon: the van that picks up riders who cannot finish).
