Freedom of the press?

Billionaire “buys” the NY Times: “The New York Times Co., which has been struggling with declining advertising sales and is facing deadlines to repay hundreds of millions in debt, is getting a $250 million infusion from Mexican telecommunications billionaire Carlos Slim.”

The press is for sale. Newspapers are desperate. People say it’s the end of journalistic freedom and independent investigation. But wait, what exactly have prominent newspapers done for us lately? Take the NY Times: the Jayson Blair scandal, the fake reports about WMD in Iraq (which influenced public opinion and the Congress’s decision to invade Iraq). This is good reporting?
